In this Science at the Local webinar, Dr Jessica Veliscek-Carolan will be discussing the future of nuclear waste.
Jessica is a Nuclear Chemist in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Research Theme at ANSTO.
Her PhD and current research is about the development of new materials that can be used to treat nuclear waste by selectively removing long-lived or radiotoxic elements. For example, approximately 96% of spent nuclear fuel still consists of uranium, which could potentially be re-used as fuel. Such materials have wide ranging potential
applications beyond treatment of nuclear waste, such as in mining and wastewater clean-up.
