Problem gamblers can often be "in plain sight" and yet go unnoticed or unrecognized. This is because gambling addiction can be a hidden or "silent" condition, with individuals often hiding their behavior and its effects from friends, family, and co-workers. Additionally, many people with gambling problems are high functioning and maintain a normal exterior, leading those around them to be unaware of the issue. It's important for friends, family, and coworkers to be aware of the signs and symptoms of problem gambling and to seek help if they suspect someone they know is struggling with a gambling addiction.
