TAFETalks: Self Assurance: What does it really mean?

Following the recent release of ASQA’s draft model for self-assurance, please join TDA for an in-depth discussion on self-assurance and what it means for the vocational education and training (VET) sector.
Christina Bolger, Deputy CEO at ASQA will introduce the concept of self-assurance, followed by Jackie Wilson, a Partner at ORIMA Research who worked closely with ASQA to develop the draft model. Jackie will be joined by representatives from TAFE SA to discuss their self-assurance model in practice. Sue Crew, Interim Director, Strategy Management, University of New England (UNE), Armidale will also provide reflections from a VET and higher education perspective on the proposed model and the implications it may have for the pursuit of quality in the VET sector.

Academic Development includes Quality and Compliance, Teaching and Learning and Strategic Industry Partnerships. Penny has professional experience in Corporate Taxation, Legal Publishing, Local Government, and Employment Services, as well as 13 years’ experience in Vocational Education, as both an Educator and an Executive. Penny has formal qualifications in Law, Commerce, Arts and Training and Assessment and in the last five years has worked extensively with the Naval Shipbuilding, Defence, Space and Advanced Manufacturing Industries on new and emerging skills needs. Mark Croft (Director, RTO Quality and Compliance @TAFE SA) Mark Croft has been the Director, RTO Quality and Compliance at TAFE SA since April 2018. His 22 year career with TAFE SA has had a strong focus on issues relating to quality. Mark has coordinated multiple RTO re-registrations and been involved in multiple regulator audits. He has audited transnational agreements off-shore for TAFE SA. He has been a leading member of TDA’s Quality, Regulation and Compliance network since its inception. Christine Bolger (Deputy Chief Executive Officer @Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA)) Christina Bolger was appointed to the newly created role of Deputy CEO in September 2020. Ms Bolger previously held leadership roles in the Australian Public Service in policy, regulation and service delivery, with experience in a range of areas including health, rehabilitation, quality and safety. She holds an Executive Masters in Public Administration (ANZSOG, ANU) and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Jackie Wilson (Partner @ORIMA Research) Jackie has recently joined ORIMA Research after over 35 years in the Australian Public Service, including over 9 years as a Deputy Secretary. Her long career spanned multiple departments including Social Services, Education, Prime Minister and Cabinet, Finance and Immigration. Jackie has held a number of senior Commonwealth positions including in program and policy areas covering health, disability, education, employment, immigration, budget and Commonwealth/State relations. Jackie was also Deputy Chair of the Department of Education’s Audit Committee for 3 years and has been a board member. Jackie has a strong interest in the design of good policy and programs informed by strong stakeholder engagement. A good example of this is her recent experience in leading the review of the child care programs and implementing the biggest reforms in child care in over 20 years. Sue Crew (Interim Director, Strategy Management @University of New England (UNE)) Sue has extensive and varied experience across the tertiary education sector, working largely in strategy, policy, quality and change with public universities, private vocational education and non-university higher education providers. Since joining the tertiary education sector she has worked at UNE in various roles, starting in international partnerships, planning and academic quality and most recently as an internal strategy consultant and now as Interim Director, Strategy Management. She has also worked in private higher education with responsibility for the higher education, VET, and ELICOS delivery arm of a private provider as well as oversight and management of academic quality and partnerships. Before returning to UNE she was CEO of UNE Partnerships and continues to engage in provider registration and re-registration audits and capacity building projects for the Department of Higher Education Research and Technology in Papua New Guinea.
