Investing in Climate Resilience with Innovative Wildfire Mitigation Technologies
The impacts of climate change have increased the severity and frequency of wildfires in the Western United States. Wildfire season is now longer and studies show the number of large fires has doubled in the last 20 years compared with the previous 20. In California, five of the six largest fires on record burned in 2020 alone and the 2021 Dixie Fire was the largest wildfire in U.S. history. Utilities are increasingly turning to innovative new technologies aimed at wildfire mitigation and prevention as a solution to rapidly respond to wildfire threats. Public utility commissioners are asked to carefully weigh the risks and benefits of a utility’s investment in climate resilience technologies. The panel of expert speakers will consider the performance of new technological adaptations on the grid system and describe challenges and lessons learned with field deployment of those resources.
