ICMAB Online Seminar: Plasmon-enhanced light–matter interaction: from molecular detection to energy harvesting applications by Luis A. Pérez
Plasmon-enhanced light–matter interaction: from molecular detection to energy harvesting applications
by Luis Alberto Pérez, NANOPTO group, ICMAB, CSIC

Plasmonics is devoted to the study of (Localized) Surface Plasmons Resonances (LSPR) and collective electron oscillations confined in nanostructures. The optical properties of LSPR are strongly dependent on intrinsic parameters such as structure, size, and morphology, but also to extrinsic parameters such as near field coupling and dielectric media. The tunability of the LSPR allows to cover a wide spectral range from the ultraviolet to the infrared. The subwavelength confined electric fields give rise to a 10-folds enhancement of spectroscopic signals (including fluorescence, Raman scattering, etc.), but also of photoacoustic effects and nonlinear optical conversion. In recent years, large efforts were undertaken to apply such concepts to energy harvesting, e.g. heat generation, photocatalysis, and solar energy conversion, with the purpose of taking profit of the hot electrons generated after the LSPR excitation.

In this seminar we will present a short introduction to the fundamentals of Plasmonics, as well as introducing the most relevant recent works in the field. We will discuss several examples such as the case of molecular detection based on colloidal aggregates, and the use of photonic crystals to enhance light absorption in the near infrared spectral range in silicon based nanostructures.

Luis Alberto Pérez obtained his PhD in Chemistry at INFIQC-National University of Córdoba, Argentina. His research interests focus on light-matter interaction, nanostructures synthesis and electrodynamic si1mulations. He is now a MSCA IF postdoctoral researcher within the project PLASMIONICO "Plasmon-resonance driven thermionic emitters for improved solar energy harvesting” with IP Alejandro Goñi.
