Bernard Sama
PhD Student @University of Auckland
Bernard Sama is a PhD student at the University of Auckland, supervised by Associate Professor Jay Marlowe and Dr Anna Hood. He came to New Zealand as an asylum seeker from the Cameroons and was recognised as a refugee in 2008. Bernard has been granted New Zealand citizenship and is grateful he and his daughters now have a safe place to live without fear of guns. His research explores how to better protect emotional and psychological wellbeing during the process of refugee status determination in New Zealand.
Deborah Pollard
Barrister @Landmark Chambers
Deborah is a barrister specialising in human rights law including refugee and immigration law. She currently practices as a barrister at Landmark Chambers in Auckland. Deborah is convener of the Auckland District Law Society Refugee and Immigration Committee and Executive Member of the Human Rights Foundation. From 2008-2011, she was a senior legal consultant to a Geneva human rights organisation which represents victims of grave human rights violations in the Arab region.
Tim Maurice
CEO @Asylum Seekers Support Trust
Having started his career as an accountant, Tim's desire to improve the skills and opportunities of others drew him to the not for profit sector over a decade ago. Most recently he was General Manager of Habitat for Humanity Bay of Plenty. Tim has a huge passion for working with asylum seekers and refugees. Whilst he is very aware of the challenges facing both the ASST and the people who rely on their support, he is inspired by the work the organisation does. He aims to make a difference in the lives of those who have given up everything seeking protection from persecution in their home country.
