What will I learn from this webinar?

Participants will understand the diversity of the South Asian diet and the three main dietary patterns found in our MASALA cohort study. They will recognise the distinction between healthy and unhealthy plant-based foods and how they are associated with future risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

- Recognise the different dietary patterns, and associations with diet and metabolic diseases among U.S. South Asians.
- Understand the effects of acculturation on health.
- Recognise differences in body composition and how this may influence health.

About Dr Alka Kanaya

Dr. Alka Kanaya is Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Kanaya has focused her research program on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention, specifically understanding Asian American health disparities over the past two decades. She is co-leading the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study to better understand factors that explain the high rates of diabetes and heart disease among South Asians. She is a practicing general internist and leads the CTSI research training programs at UCSF.
