Webinar: Congress members to attend Jones Act study unveiling
Please join the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii and two members of Congress for the public release of the institute's groundbreaking new study, “Quantifying the cost of Jones Act to Hawaii,” during a live webinar on Wednesday, July 29, starting at 10 a.m.

The historic event, taking place during the 100th year of the federal maritime law, will feature U.S. Sen. Mike Lee, Republican from Utah, and U.S. Rep. Ed Case, Democrat from Hawaii, both of whom have sponsored bills in Congress to update the Jones Act.

Lee and Case will offer their thoughts on the institute’s new study, which is the first of its kind to detail specifically how much the Jones Act costs the residents of Hawaii. It was conducted by nationally recognized economic researcher and consultant John Dunham, who will be available during the webinar to discuss the report’s methodology.

The 1920 Jones Act requires that all cargo transported between U.S. ports be on ships that are U.S. flagged, built and mostly owned and crewed by Americans. It is well known that the act adds to Hawaii’s high cost of living, but what had been lacking — until now — were figures of just how much.

Moderating the hourlong webinar will be Grassroot Institute of Hawaii President Keli‘i Akina, Ph.D., aided by the institute’s executive vice president, Joe Kent, who will field questions from the audience.
