Monitoring Solid Waste Management Using Advanced Technologies and AI-based Systems
According to the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, India generates 1.49 lakh tonne of municipal solid waste daily, of which 1.10 lakh tonne is treated. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has a robust MIS system in place which includes a set of applications like mobile app-based software, Swachhtam portal, Swachhta app, GIS mapping etc where every ULB is supposed to feed in its data. What is largely missing in this process is the source of this data at the ULB level. According to CSE’s assessment, a significant number of ULBs in India do not have a well-functioning internal monitoring system for keeping a tab on waste management operations (segregation, collection, transportation, treatment, disposal etc) or for governance (capacity building, monitoring, grievance management etc). There is enough evidence in India of cities having very efficiently used advanced technologies (RFID, QR Code, GIS, sensors, biometrics etc) in solid waste management which has resulted in substantial reduction of human resource, time and cost, thereby making the system more sustainable. The basket of advanced technologies is evolving rapidly across the world, including in India. It is, therefore, imperative to learn about the available technologies that can be deployed in ULBs -- depending on their requirement and capacity -- for monitoring solid waste management.

Centre for Science and the Environment (CSE) invites you to its Practitioners Knowledge Building Lecture where sector experts will talk about advanced technology options, where these can be deployed, what are the cost implications, what capacities are needed to use them, and what kind of institutional arrangement is needed to implement such a technology-based monitoring system. The Lecture session will also talk about how technologies can make monitoring far more inclusive by involving the citizens.
