As the restrictions surrounding COVID 19 begin to lift and we make a return to our preferred sports, we start to place increasing loads on deconditioned bodies. In order to avoid overuse injury it is important to establish appropriate strength, muscular activation and endurance.
* What are the musculoskeletal changes that occur to our bodies following enforced inactivity?
* Is it safe to return to sport having not been active for the last 6 weeks??
*How do we identify patients who are not safe to return to full activity?
* What should we do in order to help reduce their risk of injury?
Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Sheanna Maine and Physiotherapist Mr David Peirce discuss these questions and the issues surrounding return to sport following injury. This is particularly relevant to children and adolescents returning to elite sport as appropriate conditioning can also help prevent ACL and meniscal injury, particularly in the adolescent athletic population. These injuries can have catastrophic consequences to a young persons quality of life.
