Dr. Douglas Esson is a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. His many areas of interest and expertise include corneal surgery, high-risk cataract surgery, the management of glaucoma, exotic animal ophthalmology and clinical research.
Dr. Esson has trained vet students, general veterinarians, interns, residents and ophthalmologists including industry and biotech professionals. His scientific manuscripts have been published in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored texts including sections in “Veterinary Ophthalmology”, “Glaucoma” and “Veterinary Ophthalmic Surgery” as well as his own “Clinical Atlas of Canine & Feline Ophthalmic Disease”.
Dr. Esson is well known in the Southern California veterinary community where he has practiced and worked closely with the profession for over ten years. He regularly teaches and hosts wet labs and his volunteer work with wildlife has appeared in numerous publications and syndicated television shows. He is involved with multiple conservation organizations and projects and is also a regularly invited international speaker.
When not practicing ophthalmology, Dr. Esson enjoys spending time with his wife Dr Sara Calvarese DACVO who is also a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist! Dr Esson & Dr Calvarese met during their surgical training at the Magrane Science Course and share a love of science, ophthalmology and animals of all kinds.
