Sue Wilkie
Head of Instructor Development @EMD UK
Sue has over 30 years’ experience in the fitness industry as a group ex Instructor, PT and International Fitness presenter, developing programming and education in the UK and for American brands including TRX, TriggerPoint, BOSU, Stroop’s and Total Gym. She worked for Physical Company as Education Co-ordinator which led to her working on her own consultancy business developing programming for LA Fitness, with their launch of LA Primal Nationwide and latterly with Everyone Actives EA Series. Sue is a triathlete and runner spurred on by raising funds for Alzheimer and Dementia Research.
Mel Spooner
Managing Director @CAWS
After graduating from Loughborough University with a Management Sciences degree and a PR Week Award, and with the intention of carving herself a path in PR and internal communications, Mel’s career evolved instead in commercial and operational functions in the sports and fitness sector as a direct result of relationships and success stories along the way. Mel brings to the business a 15-year career history handling global responsibilities for some of the biggest brand names in the sports and fitness industry and having consulted for many of the top 100 health club chains in the world. Mel is known for her roles at major brands including Technogym, TRX and MYZONE, and most recently overseas projects for Stages Cycling and David Lloyd Clubs through the work she does with TPN International — her first company set up in 2014. Mel has been invited to join the CIMSPA Exercise and Fitness Professional Development Committee.
Dr Col Robertson
Education Director @CAWS
Best-known for linking the evidence-base of best scientific practice with the curriculum of exercise activity, Dr Col Robertson is a Senior Fellow of Advance Higher Education, and Research Coordinator and Senior Lecturer at the country’s leading Sport’s Rehabilitation department. Dr Col represents CAWS on a newly established steering panel as part of the UK’s Advanced Clinical Practice collaboration with Health Education England, with regards to upskilling clinical practitioners and fitness professionals to create parity of rehabilitation services for people who are dealing with chronic illness and disease, and comorbidites. This will mean identifying and remedying skills gaps in clinical practice and the fitness industry in terms of readiness to treat/receive patients out of the acute phase, improvements in referral links across the sectors, and removing the ‘postcode lottery’ that exists in patient care and improve parity across the UK to deliver best support in all regions.
