For much of the last century, the utility industry has lived in an operating model that has enabled the realization of what traditionally appeared in most utility mission statements: the provision of reliable, affordable, safe electricity or energy. Today, part of meeting this mission is being driven by new challenges and technologies, resulting in radical changes in how a utility maintains its infrastructure. These sweeping changes require a deeper exploration: what are the challenges, and how are the challenges of managing a huge, complex infrastructure being met? The use of new imagery and inspection technologies are enabling utility leaders to now meet the challenges of asset inspection, vegetation management, fire mitigation, and a new regulatory landscape.
